Footballer
His career began at Vasco da Gama , with which he won two Rio de Janeiro Championship titles (1982 and 1987).
PSV Eindhoven
In 1988, after the Seoul Olympics (where he won silver with the Brazilian national team, was voted best player of the competition and was the top scorer with six goals), he was signed by the Dutch PSV Eindhoven.
Romario was with this team for five years, and with them he won the league three times (1989, 1991 and 1992), won two editions of the Dutch Cup (1989 and 1990) and was top scorer in the league three times.
Barcelona
After finishing his time at PSV, Romario signed for Barcelona in the Spanish league , where he played an exceptional first season (he won the Pichichi Trophy as top scorer, with 30 goals, and was crowned league champion).
He managed to become one of the most admired footballers in the world and was part of the so-called Barcelona Dream Team, alongside Guardiola, Sergi, Stoichkov, Laudrup , Zubizarreta, Koeman and Bakero, among others.
A year later, conflicts with Barcelona coach Johan Cruyff due to his continuous trips to Brazil caused the club to dispense with his services.
Flamengo
He signed for Flamengo , where he scored 26 goals in the last 24 competitive matches.
Valencia
In 1996, Romario signed for Valencia. Once again, problems with his coach, this time Luis Aragonés , led to his return to Flamengo after having scored five goals in six games.
He was one of the most brilliant footballers throughout his career. An inspirational player, superb dribbler, and scorer of unimaginable goals, capable of captivating all the fans who have seen him play.
Selection
During his time with the Brazilian national team, Romario achieved his most important international successes, including the 1994 World Cup (in which he formed an attacking partnership with Bebeto ) and the 1997 Copa América (forming a magical forward line with Ronaldo ).
Withdrawal
He retired on April 27, 2005, saying goodbye to the Brazilian national football team with a 3-0 victory over Guatemala and scoring a goal.
His son, Romarinho, played for CR Vasco da Gama in the Brazilian Serie A Championship.
In 2009, Romario was sentenced to two and a half years of service and fined nearly $225,000 for failing to declare Flamengo's income in 1996.
Political
In the 2010 general election, Romario was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Brazilian Socialist Party.
On February 19, 2014, he announced his candidacy for the Senate of Brazil in that year's general election. On October 5, he was elected to the Senate with the majority of votes received by a candidate representing the state of Rio de Janeiro.
In June 2017, he left PSB and joined Podemos , becoming president of the party in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
In March 2018, he announced that he would run for governor of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil's general election. He received 8.6% of valid votes.
